Knit & Crochet

Knit

To be honest, I don’t quite remember the day that I picked up knitting needles. I started knitting while in high school but never really progressed. I picked it up again during freshman year of college. My friend, Abby, used to make scarves using the Speed Stix. I thought “Well, now’s a good time to start again.” That didn’t last long. I barely had time and it fell to the wayside.

I started knitting again in 2009. I wanted a nice knitted hat to replace one I had lost a few years ago. Well, I realized the best way to learn to knit is to find a easy pattern that you really like (or a challenging one if you're that type of person). I love making hats so I picked out a pretty pattern. I tried circular knitting and haven't looked back since.

Crochet

It was probably around my 3rd year at college that I picked up crochet. I don’t really recall how I came across it, but it looked easier than knitting, so I gave it a try. I also bought a knitting loom around the same time. I don’t think I actually made anything. I just bought a lot of crochet books and just looked at them. Probably because I was intimidated by the instructions since I wasn’t used to them.

Fast forward another year and half… In October 2008 I was on my 3rd and last co-op. I would work from 8-5 and be home by 6 pm. I would have the next six hours to do whatever I wanted. I realized that I was spending a lot of time online doing nothing and I was upset by that. So one day I decided to look up some patterns online that I’ve been wanting to work on. I feel in love with amigurumi and started making them from the patterns I found online.

One of the designers had a Ravelry.com button on their site and I decided to check it out. Oh wow. Ravelry changed my outlook on the yarn crafts. Here was a community of people just like me. After waiting 3 days to get the invitation, I was excited. I quickly got used to the layout and started making it mine. If you haven’t noticed by now, I have a love-hate relationship with technology and the internet. I love the easy access to information, but I hate the time I spend on it and feel like I haven’t accomplished something that day.

I started out with amigurumi and progressed to hats and embellishments like flowers. Most of the patterns were pretty simple if you know the basics of crocheting. Now I’m trying my hand at making tops. One thing at a time. If only I could crochet and read, I would be in heaven. Books on tape are not the same, I love to read.

If you would like to see my crochet projects, you can find them under the tag “Crochet” and “Photos.”
